Madurodam
April 17th, 2010 Posted in Family, Travels, birdingFriends from the UK joined us for a day at the miniature village of Madurodam in The Hague. Set up as a memorial for a Dutch WWII resistance fighter by his family, it bears his name. The village is a slice of the Netherlands. It uses models of famous buildings as a starting point to tell the story of the development of the Netherlands. The oldest section is made up of the oldest surviving famous buildings of the country and moves out to modern architecture and industrial developments.
An overview of the village: the oldest region is on the left and development spreads forward and to the left.
The oldest region:
Places we’ve been:
Hotel de Wereld, where Pete and I celebrated my birthday, is in Wageningen.
The Planetarium in Franeke, Friesland, which we visited on the Easter weekend.
The Muiderslot Castle which we hope to visit yet:
A rural scene:
Industrial Models:
Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam.
Madurodam Fun:
And an unexpected viewing (a ring-necked parakeet–they successfully live and breed in Europe):
Enjoy!

It must have been neat to see the miniture after seeing the real thing. Did you say you were staying in the Netherlands or in the rainforest?
The parakeet does look a little out of place doesn’t it. Your birders must have been delighted.

Have you gone to the National Park in Apeldoorn yet? With the white bikes? I think you’d absolutely love it. Especially the sand dunes. And the art gallery that is right in the middle of the park.
